"When I witness beauty in life, be it in a sunset, a musical performance or even someone's face, I am elevated to create. I'm inspired to find inside myself the very magic that I've just witnessed. So I rush home and paint with the intention that my art will have the same effect on others, inspiring them to recognize and express the beauty they possess within."
Greg Villegas began his creative adventure painting portraits of friends, family members and pets. Apprenticing with Lou Maestas and teaching at Art Masters Academy, his style matured and his popularity increased. In 1995 one of his first pieces, a pencil portrait of a Dalmatian, was awarded a ribbon at the New Mexico State Fair and was purchased by a gallery in Miami Beach, Florida. Greg's artwork has since been featured in prominent galleries across New Mexico.
Greg's most recent and most popular paintings are created by using the technique coined the "rub-out." Within this technique the paint is brushed on and then rubbed out with a cloth to reach the desired effect. In this early style of painting, the utilization of earth tones helps to create a classical feel. Gregory Villegas is considered in New Mexico to be one of the foremost painters in this "rub-out" style.
